Email tracking

Useful signals, honestly labelled.

WaryMail tells you when a message was opened and which links were clicked. It also tells you when it cannot know — which is more often than most tools admit.

How it works

When tracking is on for a message, WaryMail adds a 1×1 image and rewrites outbound links to signed redirects. A request for the image is an open; a redirect is a click. Both are recorded against the recipient the address was sent to, and the redirect always forwards to the original URL.

The signature is verified before anything is looked up, so the public endpoints cannot be used to probe for valid message identifiers, and identical hits inside a short window collapse into one event rather than inflating the count.

What tracking cannot tell you

We would rather say this on the marketing page than in a support ticket:

  • Blocked images mean no open. Many clients block remote images by default. A message can be read and never register.
  • Scanners open everything. Corporate mail gateways and link checkers fetch images and follow links before delivery. Hits within the first seconds are labelled as scanner activity, not counted as reads.
  • Proxies hide the reader. Where a provider proxies images, the open is real but the device, location and, sometimes, the time are not the recipient’s.
  • Plain-text mail is untrackable. No image, no pixel, no open.
  • Delivery is not confirmed. WaryMail reports what your sending server accepted and what bounced back. It cannot promise a message reached an inbox rather than a spam folder.

Control and consent

  • Tracking is switchable per message when you compose, per sending identity, and for the whole workspace.
  • Turning it off means no pixel and no rewritten links — not a hidden fallback.
  • The tracking timeline is visible to the workspace members who can see the thread, and to nobody else.
  • Tracking people who have asked you not to, or using it for unsolicited bulk mail, is a breach of the acceptable use policy.

Some jurisdictions treat tracking pixels as requiring the recipient's consent. You are the sender and therefore the controller of that decision; see the data processing information.
